A day after West African leaders declared they would gather a “standby” force in their attempts to restore the president deposed in a coup, Russia issued a warning against a military intervention in Niger on Friday.
According to the Russian foreign ministry, a military solution to the problem in Niger “could lead to a protracted confrontation in that African country, and to a sharp destabilization of the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region as a whole.”
Recall that the West African nations authorized the dispatch of a “standby force to restore constitutional order” in Niger, an intervention that will happen as soon as possible, according to President Alassane Ouattara of the Ivory Coast.
