A serving Police Inspector, Dr. Obodo Paul Ikechukwu, has reportedly been crushed to death by a police convoy in Enugu State, sparking grief and calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragic incident occurred on Bisalla Road, near the Enugu State Government House, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
According to eyewitness accounts, Dr. Ikechukwu, who was attached to the Operations Department of the Enugu State Police Command, was on his way to his duty post when he alighted from a commercial bus and attempted to cross the road. It was at that moment, witnesses said, that a speeding police convoy allegedly struck him.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the impact knocked the officer to the ground and dragged him for some distance before the convoy continued its journey.
“After realizing that someone had been hit, the vehicles in the convoy sped away without stopping to render assistance,” one witness alleged.
Sources said the deceased’s body, along with his service rifle, remained on the road for some time before passersby intervened. Concerned residents reportedly recovered his mobile phone and contacted his relatives and colleagues to inform them of the incident.
Family members of the late officer have expressed frustration over what they describe as a lack of response from relevant authorities. They alleged that efforts to obtain information about the convoy involved and secure official intervention have so far yielded little result.
As of the time of filing this report, attempts to reach the spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command for comments were unsuccessful, as calls and messages were reportedly unanswered.
The late Inspector, popularly known as “Apoka,” hailed from Nkpologu in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State. He was widely regarded as an accomplished officer and was said to be among the few serving members of the Nigeria Police Force who held a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.
The incident has generated concern among colleagues, friends, and community members, many of whom are calling for a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and ensure accountability.
Police authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of press time.
