A coordinated intelligence-led operation by Nigerian security agencies has resulted in the unconditional release of schoolchildren and their teachers abducted by Ansaru terrorists in Oyo State, bringing an end to nearly two months of captivity.
The successful search-and-rescue mission, concluded on July 9, 2026, was carried out by a Defence Headquarters-directed Joint Inter-Agency Task Force (JIATF) following a direct mandate from President Bola Tinubu to ensure the safe return of the victims.
The children and their teachers were abducted on May 15, 2026, in Oyo State. In response, the Chief of Defence Staff, in consultation with the Service Chiefs and heads of relevant security agencies, immediately constituted a Joint Inter-Agency Task Force comprising elite personnel drawn from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The task force also included operatives of the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service, the 2 Division Garrison of the Nigerian Army, and a specialized tactical unit mobilized by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). Overall coordination of the operation was entrusted to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division.
Upon deployment, the joint force launched a carefully planned multi-axis advance into the Oyo National Forest, identified as the principal sanctuary of the Ansaru terrorists. Troops moved simultaneously from different directions, progressively tightening their operational grip on the area over a three-week period. The strategy significantly reduced the terrorists’ freedom of movement and forced them into a confined enclave.
The operation was supported by persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets coordinated through ONSA, while the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police Force provided close air support. This combination of intelligence gathering and precision military action enabled security forces to identify and neutralize critical terrorist infrastructure without endangering the abducted children and teachers.
Security sources disclosed that precision strikes and ground operations destroyed key communication nodes and logistics caches used by the terrorists. As troops secured strategic locations within the forest, the terrorists’ command and control structures were severely degraded, limiting their ability to coordinate operations or sustain resistance.
Simultaneously, security agencies launched targeted operations against the terrorists’ support network. Several associates, informants, and logistical enablers operating in communities surrounding the forest were apprehended. Family members of Ansaru operatives residing in different parts of the country were also detained as part of broader efforts to disrupt the group’s operational capabilities.
These measures reportedly triggered internal fractures within the terrorist group, leading to widespread defections and the abandonment of the enclave by many fighters. Faced with relentless military pressure, disrupted logistics, collapsed communications, and declining internal cohesion, the terrorists eventually released the abducted children and teachers without any preconditions.
The victims are currently being handed over to the Oyo State Government for reunification with their families after undergoing medical evaluations and receiving initial psychosocial support.
Senior military officials described the mission as a textbook example of intelligence-driven joint operations, noting that the seamless integration of kinetic and non-kinetic measures proved decisive in compelling the terrorists to surrender their captives while ensuring the safety of the children and their teachers throughout the operation.
The successful rescue underscores the growing effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation and intelligence-led security operations in addressing complex security challenges across the country.
