President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, granting pay increases of between 30 and 80 per cent across different ranks in a move aimed at boosting troop welfare and strengthening national security.
The new salary package, announced on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, will take effect from September 1, 2026.
According to the Presidency, about 250,000 personnel of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force will benefit from the review, which will increase the federal government’s annual military wage bill by N264 billion—from N660 billion to N924 billion.
Under the new structure, officers above the rank of colonel, including brigadier generals, major generals, lieutenant generals and generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from colonel to warrant officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from the rank of private to staff sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent, reflecting the government’s focus on improving the welfare of frontline troops.
The Presidency said the revised salary package forms part of the Tinubu administration’s broader efforts to improve the welfare of military personnel alongside sustained investments in modern weapons, equipment and technology to enhance operational effectiveness.
Announcing the decision, President Tinubu said members of the Armed Forces deserve greater support in recognition of their sacrifices in defending the nation.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising troop welfare while equipping the Armed Forces with the resources needed to confront terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other security threats.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he added.
The detailed salary table showing the revised pay for each rank has yet to be released by the Federal Government.
