A Lagos-based human rights group, Nigeria Now, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to intervene over alleged interference in the operations of the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Lagos.
The group, in a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, 2026, and signed by its leader, Awudu Joseph, alleged that the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Research and Planning, DIG Zango Ibrahim Baba, had been attempting to implicate the Commissioner of Police in charge of the SFU, CP Eloho Edwin Okpoziakpo, and some officers over a case filed in 2019.
Nigeria Now said the matter was withdrawn for further investigation in December 2025 following complaints surrounding the charge, before CP Eloho assumed duty at the SFU on April 1, 2026.
The group alleged that DIG Zango later demanded that queries be issued to some SFU officers over the withdrawal of the case, but that CP Eloho sought to explain the circumstances surrounding the matter.
According to Nigeria Now, the case file showed that one of the persons charged had allegedly only provided collateral for an N18 million loan obtained by a third party and had subsequently paid more than N22 million to redeem the obligation.
The group also alleged that CP Eloho briefed the DIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), who reportedly advised that the matter should be discussed with DIG Zango before any queries were issued.
Nigeria Now claimed that DIG Zango declined to discuss the matter with the FCID DIG and insisted on issuing queries.
The rights group also questioned how confidential police documents relating to the matter found their way into the media, alleging that they were being used to blackmail CP Eloho and some SFU officers.
It urged IGP Disu to ensure an impartial review of the case file and the allegations surrounding the dispute.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and DIG Zango was not quoted as responding to the claims.
