A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after allegedly collapsing in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob, before he reportedly collapsed and died shortly afterwards.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying three persons had been arrested in connection with the case.
Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a report on October 5, 2026, at about 8pm that the lecturer had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, while the police are expected to determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, AAU Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the university but stressed that the incident occurred outside the institution.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” Aladenika said.
