The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit has been directed to immediately withdraw from all traffic enforcement activities across Lagos State in a significant restructuring of traffic management operations.
The order was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, and communicated in an official statement by the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, on Tuesday in Lagos.
According to the police, the move is part of efforts to streamline traffic control responsibilities, eliminate overlaps among enforcement agencies, and promote greater professionalism, accountability, and operational clarity on the roads.
The directive applies strictly to traffic-related duties, meaning the taskforce will no longer be involved in stopping vehicles, managing road compliance, or enforcing traffic laws. However, the unit will continue to carry out its other statutory responsibilities, including environmental sanitation enforcement and special operations.
Adebisi emphasized that the taskforce is not the only enforcement body in the state, noting that other authorized agencies will continue to oversee traffic management. She urged residents to remain law-abiding, comply with traffic regulations, and cooperate fully with legitimate security and traffic authorities operating within Lagos.
