No fewer than 1000 persons are believed dead as fighting in Israel is raging a day after Hamas fighters breached the border from Gaza in a surprise attack. Israeli officials say the death toll in Israel will surpass 600,and more than 2,000 people are wounded.
Israel has been pounding Gaza with airstrikes and formally declared war on Hamas Sunday, setting the stage for a massive military response. More than 400 Palestinians have also died, according to the health ministry in Gaza.
Hamas has captured dozens of Israelis, including soldiers, and videos authenticated by CNN show some of the dramatic seizures. Israeli forces are trying to drive the group out of southern Israel Sunday.
The full scale of the Israeli response remains unclear, but a military spokesperson hinted the country may try to take full control of Gaza for the first time since 2005.
