The Lagos State Police Command has commenced disciplinary action against officers of the Tactical Unit attached to the Mile 2 Police Station over allegations that they detained four young men and extorted ₦100,000 from them.
The development followed a report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which drew attention to the incident.
The Area Commander, ACP Godwin Oti Chike, said he investigated the matter, took statements from the four victims and identified the officers allegedly involved. He added that the ₦100,000 had been refunded to the young men.
According to one of the victims, Ayomide Akinpelu Salvation, he and three friends were arrested after running from an area where they heard a commotion involving people allegedly armed with cutlasses.
The men, who said they were returning to their hotel after visiting a cinema in FESTAC, were allegedly accused by Tactical Squad officers of being armed robbers and cultists before being taken to the Mile 2 Police Station.
Akinpelu alleged that the officers later demanded money from the four friends before their release, leading them to raise ₦100,000.
The police said the officers involved had been identified and that disciplinary action would be taken against them.
