The Abia State Police Command has recovered 28 human skulls and other bones from suspected criminal camps in the forests of Isuochi and Nneato, Umunneochi Local Government Area.
The chilling discovery was made on Sunday, September 27, during an intelligence-led raid under the command’s “Operation No Hideout for Criminal Elements in the State.”
Police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka said tactical teams raided suspected camps around Umuaku and Nneato after receiving intelligence on criminal activities in the area.
But the suspects reportedly fled into the forest as the operatives approached, leaving the camps deserted.
A subsequent search uncovered 28 human skulls and other bones, some already decomposed.
Police suspect the remains could be those of kidnap victims, but said investigations are ongoing to establish their identities and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
No arrest has been made, as the suspects escaped before the police could apprehend them.
Chinaka said surveillance of the area had been intensified while efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.
The command said the operation was part of its wider effort to dismantle criminal hideouts across the state.
It urged residents to provide information that could help security agencies locate the suspects and prevent further criminal activities in the area.
