A police sergeant has died after he was allegedly knocked down and dragged under a fleeing Lexus ES 350 during a stop-and-search operation in Lagos.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 26, 2026, along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, according to the Lagos State Police Command.
The deceased officer, identified as Sergeant Johnson Okediji, was reportedly on stop-and-search duty when police officers signalled the Lexus, with registration number FKJ 223 KX, to stop.
The driver, identified as 21-year-old Olumide Olusola, initially stopped but allegedly suddenly sped off as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side.
The officer was knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to make the driver stop.
The driver was eventually chased and arrested.
The Command said the officer sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.
His remains have been deposited at Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the Lexus has been recovered to the police station.
The death came as the Lagos State Police Command recorded a series of arrests and recoveries in September, with 32 suspects arrested in connection with armed robbery, cultism, unlawful possession of firearms and other violent crimes.
Among the items recovered were five pump-action guns, five locally made pistols, 20 live ammunition/cartridges, 15 expended ammunition, suspected criminal charms, stolen items and 43 vehicles.
In another operation, police arrested a suspected armed robbery suspect, 32-year-old Ojo Azeez, along Oko Oba Road after a hot chase. Police said a locally made cut-to-size pistol, radiator, car jack, engine block and a bag containing vehicle spare parts and tools were recovered from him.
The Command also reported the arrest of three suspected robbers in Mushin and the recovery of a pump-action gun and 11 live cartridges at Igbogbo, Ikorodu. Another suspect was arrested in Mushin, with a locally made Beretta pistol and four live 9mm ammunition allegedly recovered from his room.
In Badagry, police arrested 12 suspected members of the Eiye Confraternity in the Imeke area, recovering a Mercedes-Benz, two vehicle keys, a locally made cut-to-size gun and suspected criminal charms. Seven of the suspects have been charged to court, while investigations continue.
The Command further disclosed the arrest of a 15-year-old alleged arms courier in Oshodi who was reportedly transporting concealed firearms and ammunition inside a loaf of bread.
Police said one locally made fabricated Beretta pistol, four rounds of unexpended 9mm ammunition and a locally made single-barrel cut-to-size gun were recovered from him, with additional firearms and ammunition subsequently recovered.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, said the Command would continue to protect personnel lawfully carrying out their duties while holding officers accountable where their conduct falls short of expected standards.
