The Delta State Police Command has demoted an Inspector and a Corporal after they were found guilty of extortion and other disciplinary offences arising from an incident in which they received money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal within a police station.

The disciplinary action followed an orderly room proceeding instituted against Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, both attached to the ‘C’ Division, Asaba, after a video showing the officers receiving money through a POS terminal went viral on social media.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Command disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the orderly room trial which found both officers guilty of misconduct.

According to the statement, the officers were convicted on charges of Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion and Discreditable Conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

As punishment, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah was reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant, while Corporal Miracle Ehirim was demoted from Corporal to Constable.

The incident that led to the disciplinary action reportedly occurred on January 13, 2026, when the officers were captured receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the police station premises, an act considered a violation of existing police regulations.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance against corruption and unethical conduct, CP Oyeniyi stressed that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward extortion and all forms of professional misconduct.

The Commissioner reiterated the Inspector-General’s directive banning the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations across the country.

He warned that no police officer is authorized to demand, collect, or receive money from members of the public under any guise and emphasized that any officer found engaging in such acts would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

According to him, the sanctions imposed on the two officers should serve as a strong deterrent to other personnel and demonstrate the Command’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and transparency.

CP Oyeniyi also urged officers and men of the Command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect for the rights of citizens in the discharge of their duties.

The Command further encouraged members of the public to continue reporting incidents of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit, assuring residents that complaints would be treated promptly and appropriately.

The Delta State Police Command said it remains committed to rebuilding public confidence through strict enforcement of discipline and adherence to the ethical standards expected of police personnel.
