The former head of the Pension Reform Task Force Abdulrasheed Maina, has been rushed to hospital and admitted after collapsing in Abuja due to complications from an untreated knee injury.
His media aide, Emmanuel Ekwe, reported that Maina fell while attempting to enter his office on Tuesday, losing his balance and hitting his head on a staircase before receiving immediate medical assistance.
First responders provided initial care at the scene before transporting him to a private hospital in the Federal Capital Territory for urgent treatment. Maina is currently under close observation by medical staff, who are monitoring his condition.
His medical team has suggested that an air ambulance evacuation may be necessary if his health does not improve soon.
Maina’s family has requested privacy during this time and has asked the public to keep him in their prayers as doctors continue to treat him.
He was recently released from Kuje Correctional Centre after serving time for pension fraud.
In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him of laundering over N2 billion belonging to pensioners, many of whom died without receiving their retirement benefits.
The Court of Appeal upheld his conviction and eight-year sentence in May 2023.
