The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed taking custody of Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, son of former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina, following his arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Faisal was reportedly arrested after intelligence indicated that he had secretly returned to Nigeria, according to security sources cited by TheCable.
He was subsequently handed over to the EFCC for further action.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale reportedly confirmed that the commission had taken custody of Faisal and would obtain the necessary court order for his transfer to a correctional centre to serve his sentence.
Faisal was convicted in 2021 over charges relating to money laundering. He was initially sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment, but the Court of Appeal reduced the sentence to seven years in November 2022.
His latest arrest comes years after he reportedly jumped bail and left the country while his case was ongoing.
The development marks a significant turn in the long-running legal proceedings involving the family of the former pension reform task team chairman, who was himself convicted in a separate money-laundering case.
Further details regarding Faisal’s arrest and the arrangements for his return to custody are expected to emerge as the EFCC proceeds with the necessary legal steps.
Editorial note: Before publication, verify the exact date Faisal jumped bail and the status of his sentence. The headline’s “six years” should be retained only if the timeline supports it. Also confirm the precise offences and sentence details against the court judgment.
