Former Head of the Inspector-General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, has earned a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution while in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

Kyari was formally awarded the degree on Monday, according to a copy of the certificate made available to The Whistler by a family member, Abdul Hadi Ibrahim.

The certificate confirms that Kyari successfully completed his postgraduate programme at the Nigerian Open University (NOUN), Kuje Correctional Centre Campus, where inmates are enrolled under the institution’s special study arrangement aimed at promoting rehabilitation through education.

Prior to joining the Nigeria Police Force, Kyari obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Geography. He later rose through the ranks of the police to lead a specialised intelligence unit responsible for tracking and dismantling kidnapping and terrorist networks across the country.

Despite being in detention, Kyari remained committed to academic and personal development, culminating in the successful completion of the master’s programme. He has also indicated his intention to proceed immediately with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

In a statement issued on Kyari’s behalf, Ibrahim described the achievement as a powerful demonstration of resilience, discipline, and determination in the face of adversity.

“This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to resilience, personal discipline, and an unyielding commitment to self-improvement, even under challenging circumstances,” the statement read.

He expressed deep gratitude to Almighty God for His guidance and grace, while also commending the Vice-Chancellor and Management of the Nigerian Open University for their inclusive vision and support for education without barriers.

The statement further appreciated the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, his management team, and the officers and personnel of the Kuje Correctional Centre for providing an enabling environment that supports learning, rehabilitation, and personal growth.

“This milestone reinforces the truth that leadership, excellence, and the pursuit of knowledge transcend circumstances,” Ibrahim concluded.
