Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has lamented the silence of some former colleagues, friends and associates amid his ongoing legal troubles.
In a personal statement titled **“My Relationships and the Aftermath,”** dated September 23, 2026, El-Rufai said many of those he once stood by have chosen to remain quiet or distance themselves.
He, however, said he bears no resentment towards them.
El-Rufai said he supported people and causes over the years because he believed it was the right thing to do, not in expectation of praise or reciprocity. He said his actions were guided by his Islamic faith, Arewa upbringing, personal values and conscience.
According to him, those he previously supported are now free to make their own choices — including speaking out, remaining silent or distancing themselves.
“Their reasons are their own, and I do not wish to judge them merely because their response differs from what others — or even I — might have expected.”
He said the experience of recent months has given him cause to reflect:
“Adversity has a way of illuminating relationships,” he said, adding that he might “quietly and without regret” reassess certain relationships.
He stressed that such reassessment should not be seen as condemnation.
“I have no regrets about standing by people or for causes when I believed it was right to do so, and I bear no resentment towards anyone who chooses not to do the same for me,” he said.
On any perceived injustice, he said he is not seeking revenge, leaving ultimate accountability to Almighty Allah.
El-Rufai is currently facing legal proceedings and remains in ICPC custody. He has pleaded not guilty and described the prosecution as politically motivated.
