The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun on April 26, 2026.
The decision followed the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings initiated on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. All officers connected to the incident were earlier withdrawn from Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for investigation.
Findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee established that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in violation of established rules governing the use of firearms, describing his conduct as unlawful and unprofessional.
Based on the committee’s recommendations, the police authorities approved the immediate dismissal of the officer and others found culpable, with the decision forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
The Force also confirmed that the affected officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution upon completion of administrative procedures.
Reaffirming its stance, the police leadership said it maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, stressing that any officer found violating the law will face disciplinary and legal consequences.
The Inspector-General extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be served, while urging members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding.
