The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, on Tuesday officially launched the Lagos phase of the POWA CARES Initiative, a nationwide programme aimed at improving the welfare of police families.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mrs. Disu described the initiative as a strategic effort to strengthen national security by prioritising the well-being of officers’ families. She noted that global evidence shows that officers perform more effectively when their families are adequately supported.
The Lagos rollout follows the success of the programme’s first phase in Abuja, where more than 1,000 beneficiaries received eye care services and medical support. According to her, the Abuja intervention highlighted both the scale of need and POWA’s capacity to deliver impactful, structured interventions.
In Lagos, the initiative is expected to reach over 1,000 beneficiaries with free eye screening and treatment, provision of corrective eyewear, dental services, and general medical consultations. Beyond healthcare, the programme also includes nursing scholarships, financial grants to 200 families, and distribution of Cowry transport cards to ease mobility.
Mrs. Disu added that the initiative goes beyond welfare by promoting inclusion and recognition. Selected beneficiaries will participate in engagement sessions with top government and police leadership, including the Inspector General of Police and the Lagos State Governor.
The programme also features sensitisation sessions for young people, addressing issues such as drug abuse, cultism, and sexual and reproductive health, aimed at strengthening community values and safeguarding the next generation.
Describing POWA CARES as a shift from one-off welfare interventions to a structured and sustainable social protection framework, Mrs. Disu emphasised the importance of collaboration. She said the initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, government agencies, healthcare providers, and development organisations to ensure long-term impact.
She expressed appreciation to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, for their support, as well as medical professionals and other partners contributing to the programme’s success.
Mrs. Disu urged beneficiaries to take full advantage of the services provided, stressing that investing in police families ultimately strengthens institutions and national development.
The Lagos phase of the POWA CARES Initiative will run for two days.
