As public interest grows over the marriage of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, attention has turned to his wife, Her Highness Zaynab Otiti Obanor, whose profile extends far beyond her husband’s public office.
Findings reveal that Obanor has built an independent career in youth leadership, humanitarian coordination, peace-building and institutional development, with engagements across Africa, Europe and the Gulf.
Sources familiar with her work said she is not new to responsibility but has largely operated outside public attention until now.
“She has handled serious responsibilities for years. What is new is the spotlight,” a source said.
Obanor is described as reserved but intellectually grounded, with experience in diplomacy and cross-regional development. Associates said her professional focus has consistently been on impact rather than visibility.
“She is more concerned about results than applause,” another associate noted.
Her work, according to sources, includes coordinating youth empowerment programmes, contributing to humanitarian efforts and participating in policy discussions involving African governments, European institutions and Gulf partners.
Those close to her stressed that she has no interest in political office or using her marriage for influence, adding that her professional path remains separate from her husband’s role as SGF.
“Marriage has not changed her direction. It is a personal union, not a political one,” a source said.
Observers say Obanor’s story reflects a growing trend of women linked to public office holders maintaining independent careers and professional identities, even as public attention intensifies.
