President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the persistent political crisis and breakdown of governance.
The President suspended the Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) has been nominated as Administrator to take charge of the state’s affairs.
The declaration, which takes effect immediately, does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier summoned a high-level security meeting at the Presidential Villa, bringing together the nation’s top security and intelligence officials.
In attendance are the service chiefs, Inspector-General of Police, National Security Adviser, as well as the Director-Generals of the State Security Service (SSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
