A 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, has been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for allegedly killing his girlfriend and hiding her decomposing body inside the toilet of his apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.
The victim, identified simply as Chinyere, was allegedly killed on September 19, 2026, following an argument with Emmanuel over allegations concerning who infected the other with HIV.
According to the police, Emmanuel confessed during preliminary interrogation that he struck Chinyere on the head with a pestle during the argument, leading to her death.
He allegedly wrapped her remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet.
The crime was reportedly uncovered two days later after the offensive odour from the decomposing body attracted neighbours, who forced their way into the apartment and apprehended the suspect.
Police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said the suspect was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by operatives of the Awkunanaw Division.
The remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to locate the victim’s relatives.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has ordered an investigation and directed that the suspect be arraigned after investigations are concluded.
The police also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution about people they visit or spend time with and keep trusted persons informed of their movements.
